The 2010 St Francis Xavier Museum-Release, Single-Vineyard Riesling was produced with fruit from the Weikert Vineyard, one of Sevenhill’s ve Riesling vineyards. This small vineyard (0.82ha) was planted in 1978 and has been recognised for consistently producing outstanding fruit to meet premium requirements. The highly regarded clone from Geisheim is planted in the protected site. The vineyard’s red-brown loam soil and cool, sheltered aspect are key elements in achieving the balanced growth and ne qualities we seek for our premium Rieslings.
A return to near average rainfall in 2009 laid the foundation for a favourable 2010 vintage. Sevenhill received 619mm of rain in 2009 – the best since 2005. Importantly, there was an even spread of good falls during, winter, spring and early summer. As a result, increased soil moisture produced large canopies and, although conditions were dry during January and February, the fruit ripened evenly without having to contend with the heat-wave conditions of recent summers. Vintage proceeded with very mild, friendly temperatures during February and March, enabling all varieties to be picked at optimum ripeness.
The winemaking style is preservation of the pristine fruit characters that develop during ripening of the berries. The grapes are picked in the coolest period of the day and gently pressed and fermented at a very low temperature. The Weikert block has high natural acidity and minerality, giving this wine the backbone to age beautifully and increase in complexity.
