De Bortoli Wines’ single vineyard brand ‘Riorret’ has been awarded the highest scoring Australian wine at the UK’s prestigious Global Pinot Noir Masters. The wine is from The Abbey Vineyard at Tarrawarra in Australia’s Yarra Valley.
The Riorret Abbey Pinot Noir 2013 won gold in the Still Oaked £20 to £30 category, and was the third highest scoring wine in the competition.
The judging panel comprised nine Masters of Wine and a Master Sommelier who judged more than 300 of the world’s finest Pinot Noirs.
The Abbey Vineyard
One of Yarra Valley’s premium vineyards located at Tarrawarra. It typically produces brooding dark fruited Pinot Noir with real power.
2013 was quite warm but produced quite aromatic plump Pinot Noir. Good fruit maturity and natural acidity, abundant flavour and generally a calm harvest.
Bright red fruits, nuance of stems, plums and spice. Brooding, plump, great length, seriously delicious.
Hand sorting of fruit to ensure perfect fruit reached the fermenter. Four plunges and four remontage in 20 days. Matured on fine lees in new and used casks for 10 months. Gravity at all stages.
Store in a cool cellar and this wine should develop further complexity with four to five years.
